Tower Magazine publishes longer-form investigative and narrative journalism from within the academic community at the University of Birmingham. The focus of the magazine is on longer-form journalism that doesn’t just follow the news cycle, providing a space to tell thoughtful non-fiction stories and investigate problems in depth.

The primary objective of the project was to design and build a website using a bespoke WordPress theme, but also encompassed logo design and branding.

The magazine’s name derives from Muirhead Tower, a prominent campus building completed in 1969 and designed by Philip Dowson of Arup Associates. The font selected for the logo, Bulevar, is suitably towering in style, with its sharp edges, aptly reflecting the brutalist style of the tower. The stacked strapline further pays homage to the iconic high-rise structure.

The website uses a conventional blog style with several custom features. This allows the team to create tailored and sophisticated editorial style articles despite limited in-house design and visual resources.

The website is simple, bold, and visually distinctive, with great little touches... (Hey Joe were) extremely helpful and responsive throughout the process, working with my ideas but never afraid to offer design alternatives. I couldn't imagine a better service for a small website like mine.
